Freefall
What do I want to create? Do I have control over my creative process? Where do I have control? Where do I want to have control? If I have control, can I let it go? When I let go, what’s left?
Freefall – means that I am falling, and I admit that, I embrace it. Yes, I don’t know what I’m doing. And nobody does. Nobody has “adult”, objective knowledge; everyone lives according to learned behavior patterns, to the need to make money, to the social expectations. Almost all of our control is an illusion.
Freefall – is not giving this fact negative or positive meaning, but merely an acceptance and acknowledgement. We control nothing. And at the same time, we are in control of our actions every second. Every second we have the choice of submitting to circumstances or going against them.
The project illustrates this meditative sense of “going with the flow” – surrendering to the moment without completely relinquishing responsibility and control.
A series contains square canvases, on which I paint in as many different environments as possible, capturing the environment and how it affects my condition. I consciously choose the location, materials and color palette. Then, I let the external circumstances influence me. I relinquish control over everything else and do not try to paint intentionally. This way, I control and let go of control over different aspects of the work. I don’t know what the end result will be, I let my intuition lead me instead.
I don’t rush, but I don’t slow down by thinking about the next step either. I accept all the circumstances beyond my control as an integral part of the process. Twice I was asked to leave by the police. Both times I walked away and left the canvas as it was.
Every creation is a meditation. A transition into some other state of consciousness. An immersion into your work, in which you exist in a slightly different state of mind.
This work is primarily about a meditative process. It’s an attempt to think differently and not control what I “think”.
